Batik Indonesia, Madura Batik Village, East Java, Indonesia : Batik Villages of Indonesia

Part 1 : Batik Bangkalan

Madura is an island that connected by Suramadu bridge from Surabaya, the capital city of East Java province, Indonesia. Bangkalan is the first city of Madura island after we crossing along Suramadu bridge.


Madura batik characteristic has a bright and varied colors such as red, yellow, green, and blue.  

These colors are produced from natural dyes such as natural Soga from mengkudu 'noni' and steeper for the red color.  

Tarum leaves for blue colour, bark mundu plus alum for the green color effect.  


Bright and dark colors produced through the length of the fabric soaking for 1 to 3 months, even reaching 1 yearThis soaking process will make batik color fabric more durable than usual.

Bangkalan batik motifs over a thousand species. Its motif's name related to pictures and colours that is interpreted to the local language.  

The names of these motifs are: ramo, ramo banjo, rongterong, perkaper, rawan, serat kayu, panca warna, and so on.  

Bangkalan batik is worked for 1 week and sold at a price IDR 50,000.00 - 75.000, 00 (equal to USD 5 - 7.5) .  


While Bangkalan batik made from silk done for 1 to 2 months and sold for IDR 500,000.00 - 1,000,000, 00 (equal to USD 50 - 100).  

In Bangkalan Batik Village, we can find batik shop that give visitor opportunity to try make batik by their own hand with free of charge if we buy some batik cloth from this shop.

However, the most expensive and famous Bangkalan batik named batik gentongan.

Batik gentongan is a unique batik from Tanjungbumi, Bangkalan Madura. The characteristics of this batik is very bright and varied colors and subtle workmanship. Mostly have a motive : Sik Melaya, Bunga kapok, ola-ola, Burung hong, Panji susi, and so on. One piece of batik gentongan cloth is worked for 1 year. The batik gentongan cloth was soaked in barrel named gentongan for 6 months and then after drawn, batik cloth will be soaked again for 3 to 4 months. Price of a piece batik gentongan cloth can reach up to IDR 3.500.000,00 (equal to USD 350). The price depends on the level of difficulty and the length of the design process. Currently batik gentongan is the most batik cloth that is demanding by the batik collectors.

Batik Indonesia, Laweyan Batik Village, Solo Central Java Indonesia : Batik Villages of Indonesia

Laweyan Batik village located in Jl Dr Rajiman, Laweyan Surakarta Central Java, Indonesia- 57148 



Laweyan Batik village is one of a center area batik industry in Solo Central Java Indonesia which has existed since 1546s and achieve greatness in the 1970s.  

Traditional art batik has been constantly engaging by Laweyan communities until now.  




The batik activities atmosphere in Laweyan past dominated by the presence of the batik bosses as a business owner.   



When we visited there, we can see the process of making batik and even get a short course of making batik by ourselves. 


That's a kind of excited experience that we will not get in stores or boutiques elsewhere.  




As a strategic move to preserve the art of batik, Laweyan Batik village is designed as a settlement batik, even officially been announce by Solo City Government as one of the attractions shopping in Solo.

Along the way of Kauman Batik village, the visitors can find at least 20 showroom / gallery batik, there are Puspa Kencana Batik, Morin Modiste, Nesa Noer, Cempaka, Gunawan Design, Gres Tenan, Molino, Chusnul Khotimah, New Tjahaya, Nugroho, Santika, Sidoluhur, Adityan, Merak Ati, Tjokro Sumanto, Gentong Ayu, Putra Laweyan, Luar Biasa, Merak Manis and Cahaya Putra.

Batik Indonesia, Kauman Batik Village, Solo, Central Java Indonesia : Batik Villages of Indonesia

Kauman Batik village is an ancient village where Islamic religious officers (from the rank of regents to bottom Tribe) live then called Kauman. Kauman Batik village is surrounded by Rajiman (Coyudan) street, Nonongan street and the northern part of Slamet Riyadi street as strategic roads in Solo, Central Java. Besides, surrounded by historic places such as Gladak, Beteng, Slompretan (known as  Market Klewer).

Kauman Batik village has close links to the history of the palace movement from Kartosuro to Solo which later changed its name to Kasunanan.  


Kauman Batik village consist of several layers society, the majority population in the village is 'kaum' peoples so that's why the name "kauman" come from.
 


The Kauman Batik village community get special training from Kasunanan or palace for producing batik, scarves and so in other words, the tradition of Kauman Batik village truly inspired by Kasunanan palace. 



Based on this expertise, peoples from Kauman Batik village can product batik motifs that are often used by the royal family.
 
During its development, the art of batik in Kauman Batik village can be divided into three forms of classical batik motifs grip, batik pure printing and hand writing models and printing-hand writing combination




Batik motifs grip that is heavily influenced by batik art of court Kasunanan palace is a superior product of Kauman Batik village, mostly are made using natural silk, silk weaving, cotton, and rayon.
Kauman Batik village have 20-30 home industries have a loyal buyers subscription from foreign tourists (Japan, Europe, Southeast Asia and the United States). 


Uniqueness offered to the buyers and tourists is the ease of transactions, and the opportunity to visit home industry venue to look the production batik activities so the visitors have an experience to learn the process of making batik and even they are able to practice the batik activities.
